UpdateStar Localization

UpdateStar is not available in your language yet? No problem! You can create and translate your own language file to use UpdateStar in your preferred language.

First, check if your language version is already available.

If you've already translated UpdateStar and would like to make your language version available to other users, simply send your language file to localization@updatestar.com. We'll gladly integrate it into the next UpdateStar release, making it available to all UpdateStar users worldwide.

Three Steps to Your Own Language Version

We recommend the free tool Resource Hacker for editing language files. Download and extract the application to get started.

Create Language Directory

In the UpdateStar installation directory's /lang/ folder, you'll find all installed language files and directories. Create a new language directory and name it according to ISO standards.

A valid subdirectory in the UpdateStar /lang/ directory must follow the format xx-xx. The first two letters indicate the language code (ISO 639-1), while the last two indicate the country code (ISO 3166). A directory with just the language code is also valid.

Copy the resources DLL from an existing directory (EN or DE) into your newly created directory.

Start Translation

Launch Resource Hacker and use File → Open to load the ustarrs.dll file from your newly created /lang/ directory. All components will appear in the tree view on the left.

Only translate strings in these sections:

  • Menu
  • Dialog
  • String Table

After making changes, click Compile Script and save your work using File → Save. Your language version will be available the next time you start UpdateStar.

Important Notes

Please observe the following guidelines to prevent errors:

  • Do not delete any content
  • Only modify text within quotation marks; leave all other elements unchanged
  • Many texts contain percent signs (%) that are replaced at runtime with variable values
  • Do not modify or delete anything following a percent sign until the next space, or UpdateStar may malfunction
  • Do not use ampersands (&) in translated text. Remove any ampersands present in the original
  • Do not modify \n sequences, which indicate line breaks
